Ash Walls (They/Them) is one of the shop assistants in Design Works. Ash is a current senior, majoring in art education. Ash is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet. Ash is compassionate, kind, and also very sarcastic. You will always find Ash making everyone laugh! Ash is a Taurus! Let us introduce you to Ash!
What drew you to apply to Design Works?
“Rebs and I used to live on the same floor at Kerr Hall, and so I knew that Design Works existed because they used to be a shop assistant before leaving and coming back as a designer. I had always admired going in the shop both for printing needs and the cute storefront, and in the fall of 2020 I decided to apply. I didn’t hear back for a while after my interview; I found out later I was initially the second choice, but the first choice never replied about being offered the job. Thus, I was offered the job, started December 2020, and worked there for a little over a year until January 2022!”
If you could add anything to the Design Works office, what would it be?
“I think that a shared bookshelf that everyone could add their trinket to would be really cool. One of my favorite things about working at Design Works was seeing each person’s desk decorating style, so a mix of everyone’s stuff would make me really happy!”
What is your favorite Design Works memory?
“Last summer was the first day our old boss, Steve, came back after working from home through the pandemic. The shop is pretty slow over the summer, so it was just me and him there for most if not all of the day. It was so nice finally meeting him in person and getting to know him, and even though we have both left the DW world he is still a really important mentor to me.”
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is “Kimi no Na Wa,” aka “Your Name.” It makes me cry every time even though I know what’s going to happen!
What is your aesthetic?
“Definitely the pastel kawaii aesthetic. I want to bring this more into my business casual wardrobe, but it’s so hard to find things that are both pink and “professional” looking!”
Scrappy or Lucky?
“Lucky! Even though I never saw him in my 4 years of attending UNT, I still treasure the small plush I have of him and all the lore surrounding his existence.”
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
“I’d like to be able to draw/make the exact thing I picture in my head! Whether it’s illustrations or animations/animatics that pop in my head when I’m listening to songs, the ability to make the exact thing I imagined would be so cool and also make creating less frustrating!”
“I love El Fenix, but mainly for their chips and salsa. I am so disappointed that the Denton location shut down!”
What are your future plans?
“I’m about to graduate with my art teaching certification, and I am currently in the process of interviewing at a few places to get a job teaching middle school art! Ideally, I want to work in the district I am currently student teaching at, which is also where I graduated from. After a few years, I’d like to teach digital art/design at the high school level. I don’t plan to stay in Texas, but I don’t know exactly where I want to move yet.”
We are so lucky to have Ash on our team! Design Works wouldn’t be the same without them! They graduate next week, so everyone wish Ash a happy graduation! We can’t wait to see you soar!
