You see the breathtaking pictures splashed across Instagram, Facebook, and around the Union. They’re gorgeous, but aren’t you ever curious as to the creative mind behind the lens? Meet Hope Alvarez, the Union photographer for the marketing team for the past six months. She’s been documenting student life on campus and capturing shots for the UNTThreads and HumansofUNT campaigns among many others. You’ve seen her work, allow us to show you the face behind the camera.
What drew you to photography?
“My sister, Gabby, is actually the reason I’m a photographer. She used to take photography classes in junior high and of course, I wanted to be just like my big sister. From there I just started shooting with disposable cameras. I just liked the idea of documenting life and holding onto those memories forever. The more pictures I took, the more my passion developed.”
What is your favorite thing about what you do?
“My favorite thing about this job is meeting so many different people with different backgrounds. I learn something new from everyone I meet, and at the end of the day I can’t help but smile and feel incredibly thankful. My experiences with this job have allowed me to grow and develop into the photographer I’ve always wanted to be.”
What are your strengths, in your own words?
“I would say my strength is my relaxed attitude. As a photographer, I’m constantly working with people I don’t know and most likely aren’t used to having a camera in their face. It’s my job to make them feel comfortable. I could be working with someone for five minutes or five months, and it’s important that they trust me and can communicate with me. Recently I met someone and when she asked what my name was she gasped and said, “I had a feeling your name would be calming because you carry such a relaxed vibe.” Like wow! Thank you!”
What is your favorite photo you’ve ever taken?
“That’s a tough one because I feel like every photo is my favorite. We’ll go with this one. Look at all those colors!”
What songs are on your playlist?
“It depends on the playlist. I take my playlists very seriously. Some are filled with bands like New Found Glory, The All-American Rejects, and Transit. Some are filled with bops from Lily Allen, Hillary Duff, and even the Lilo & Stitch Soundtrack. Oh, I even have a playlist that’s dedicated to only Paramore. I just really like music.”
What is your spirit animal?
“A cat, duh.”
What’s your favorite color?
“Blue. Always. Pink and yellow follow close behind.”
What is your brain food?
“I’m not sure if it counts as brain food, but Pad Thai with tofu. I eat it probably once a week.”
What are your goals for the future?
“As simple as it sounds, I just want to grow. I feel like that’s something I’ll never stop doing.”
