Alumni Throwback: Xavier Carson

Xavier Carson, BBA in Marketing ’15 – Coach, Union Master Plan Committee 2012-2015

What was your role here?

I was a coach here on the committee. So I worked with different students, presented the Union master plan, and after approval, we helped assist with getting people excited for the new Union by promoting it and giving tours.

If you could sum up your experience in the Master Plan Committee in one-two words, what would it be?

Exciting, interesting

What was your first memory of working at the Union?

I guess just working with the construction company and interacting with a lot of people from different departments and students.

What have you done since graduating from UNT? / What do you do now?

Right after graduating, in the summer of 2015, I started working at Liberty Mutual Insurance in Richardson, TX. They recently opened up a new facility, so I’m now based in the Plano office. I recently started a new role as a Premium Auditor for Liberty Mutual.

How did your time at the Union prepare you for the future?

It helped me so much. It taught me how to step into a room, network, and meet a bunch of people. Also, I learned that at times, you’re going to be presented with concepts and ideas that you may not have a very good understanding of, but if you just take your time and focus, then eventually you’ll take in all that information and learn a lot.

What was the most important lesson you learned?

I think the most important lesson I learned during that time – that’s a great question – the importance of being able to accept not knowing everything and learning to ask for help. I think that’s helped me transition into the work world, just understanding that “Hey Xavier, you’re not going to understand everything that’s thrown at you”. But it’s important to just stick with it and come into every situation with receptiveness to feedback and learning new things.

What is your favorite thing about your job currently?

I feel like this is cliche, but I like that every day involves something different. I get to work a lot of commercial businesses, so one day I could be working on something with Disney or talking to some guy in Oklahoma about life on an oil field. So just getting to talk to a lot of different people from different companies is the most exciting thing.

What do you wish other people knew about the Union?

It’s the best place on campus!

A thing you miss about UNT?

The feel of being immersed in a college environment, the consistency. Now being in the work world, I will still hands-down say that college was and is the best time of my time. The things I learned just by going through it and being in an environment with so many people with different backgrounds and cultures. I miss that.

What’s your superpower?

To fly

What’s your spirit animal?

A hawk

What is your brain food?

What’s on your playlist?

Vory and of course, Drake

What do you always grab before going out to work?

My phone, hahah and work laptop

What’s your favorite color?

Advice for current students?

Immerse yourself in the college atmosphere. Of course, don’t take on more than you can handle, but try to participate and be engaged. That was one of the most important things I did that helped me transition out of college. The work world is just being receptive and engaged because it’s competitive. If you can be an engaged individual, then the opportunities will open up for you.
