Abner Gonzalez, ’14

UPC Special Events Coordinator & Vice President of Marketing, 2012 – 2014Abner_Gonzalez

What was your fondest memory at UPC?

My favorite memory was the J Cole concert. A lot of work went into that. Everyone involved did a lot to make it happen and promote it. That was an awesome memory.

What was your favorite project or assignment?

Crazy events like the foam parties were great ways for freshmen to get involved and meet people.

What would you say had the greatest impact on you at UPC?

I think learning to work in an office environment and as a team. I learned a lot of organizational skills and how to pick an idea, come up with it from scratch, and make it a reality. I even use these skills today in my real world job.

Where did you go after graduating?

Right after graduation, I started working as a TeleCom engineer at Nokia. I’m still here. Even though it sounds completely different from the stuff I did at UPC, there are many applicable skills from UPC. I use basic organizational skills and communication skills. I actually did learn a lot and I still use those skills.

What would you say is your favorite thing about your job?

I get to play around with cellular networks. I actually get to see technology that may not be out yet and figure out how they work. I enjoy doing it.

How would you say that your time at UPC prepared you for your current job?

I had jobs before UPC, but UPC was my first office job. Coordinating meetings, being a team member, scheduling things were special to UPC. All of that helped me in my current role.

What’s one thing you miss about UNT?

A lot. I miss the whole culture of UNT. It’s so easy-going and meeting new people is easy. Especially at UPC, I got to interact with other student organizations and meet so many new people. To be honest, it’s a great school and I really enjoyed my time at UNT.

What advice do you have for current students?

Enjoy your time in school because it’s real out here. Don’t stress too much, but do the best you can.

If you could be an animal, which would you be?

It’d be cliche to say an eagle, but it’d be really cool to fly.

What’s something you could not live without?

The gym, I’d probably go crazy if I couldn’t blow off steam at the gym.

What is on your music playlist?

New Drake songs.

What is your favorite color?

What can you not leave the house without?

If you could do anything in the world, what would you do?

I’d probably be a teacher. I like teaching people and I think I’d enjoy that.
