Designer Profile: Caroline Hailson

If you don’t know what UNT Design Works is, you’re missing out. Run by Union Marketing, Design Works is a print shop that prints large and small format specialty print jobs, as well as operates as a graphic design firm. Services are available to students, departments, and the public. Design Works produces a lot of really great designs (hence the name) so we would like to take some time to profile the excellent designers we have on staff not just because they’re awesome but so you can see their past work and find insight on their personal style, should you like to hire them.

CAROLINE HAILSON, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS DESIGN MAJOR, ENTP UNION DESIGN WORKS

CAROLINE’S STRENGTHS, ACCORDING TO STRENGTHS QUEST, ARE:

  1. X-Ray Vision
  2. Mind Control
  3. Invisability
  4. Super Strength
  5. Crying On Command

“I would say being calm and collected. I don’t get easily rattled. I’m also easy to talk to. I don’t let my emotions get in the way of stuff.”

WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL?

“Definitely a tiger. I’ve always felt a connection to them. When I was little, I thought I was a tiger. That’s one of my mom’s favorite stories to tell to my friends. I didn’t think I was a child. I was a tiger. I’ve always thought my personality meshes well with cats. On the outside, they’re big and scary, but on the inside, they are just like a regular house cat. ”

WHAT IS YOUR BRAIN FOOD?

“Dark chocolate covered almonds because they’re an easy to eat snack and they’re good for you too.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR?

“I don’t know if I have one, but I do like gold. I have a lot of gold shiny stuff.”

WHAT TOOLS COULD YOU NOT DESIGN WITHOUT?

“Oh gosh. These tiny clear rulers (right angles are important) and micron pens. I use a lot of micron pens.”

WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG?

“My entire life. I always carry my computer with me and my bag of writing utensils; pens, pencils, markers.  I also try to have snacks with me at all times as well, just in case because I always forget to eat meals, so snacks are crucial.”

WHAT WOULD YOU BE IF YOU WEREN’T A DESIGNER?

“I don’t know. My next passion would be music. Anytime that I’m by myself, I’m singing to myself, so if I could be anything else, it would be a singer in a band. Maybe one day, I’ll do that too.”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE (OR LEAST FAVORITE) TYPE FACE?

“My favorite would have to be Gotham. I like how geometric and that it just seems to go with everything that I do. My least favorite though, I’d have to say Bleeding Cowboy. Oh that [typeface] can just die. That is the wost. I hate it! Everything I hate about the South and country people is embodied in that typeface. It’s a huge rhinestone purse with a cross on it. Ugh. I hate it.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A DESIGNER?

“How much design goes into everything. It wasn’t until I started design school that I realized the smallest things have a design in them. People read all the time and don’t realize that someone spent time on the typeface that they’re reading. They don’t give it a second thought, but so much time and effort went into these things you use in your everyday life.”
