Designer Profile: Noah LeGrand

If you don’t know what UNT Design Works is, you’re missing out. Run by Union Marketing, Design Works is a print shop that prints large and small format specialty print jobs, as well as operates as a graphic design firm. Services are available to students, departments, and the public. Design Works produces a lot of really great designs (hence the name) so we would like to take some time to profile the excellent designers we have on staff not just because they’re awesome but so you can see their past work and find insight on their personal style, should you like to hire them.

What is your designer playlist?

  5. E40 Ft Suga-T – Sprinkle Me

“I love Randy Newman. He is the greatest musician that has ever lived, he has been nominated for 9 oscars and he has won one of them. He is the songbird of his generation. I just love him so much.”

“I have a show on the 21st at Andy’s Bar in Denton at 8:30 PM [of my own music] and my short film Hot Rod Brothers is also premiering then too.”

What is your spirit animal?

“I’m not going to say spirit animal, but I’m going to say I have a cosmic link to red pandas. Recently, I was going through a box of my stuff at my parents’ house and I found a little red panda and I knew it was true.”

What is your brain food?

“Chicken nuggets, French fries, Cheez-Its, peanut butter sandwiches, and Diet Pepsi. I don’t know why it’s my favorite soda. I think regular Pepsi is disgusting. ”

What is your favorite color?

“It is a hard tie between royal blue and sea foam. I’ve always been a blue guy. I’m blue da ba dee da ba daa Da ba dee da ba daa, da ba dee da ba daa, da ba dee da ba daa Da ba dee da ba daa, da ba dee da ba daa, da ba dee da ba daa.”

If you weren’t a videographer, what would you be?

“I would make action figures. I would design and craft toys. It’s 100% of what I told my parents I would do as a child.”

Tell me about Douglas the UNT Puppet.

“Christmas time 2014, I worked at a Toys R Us as a seasonal employee. I was very bad at it, but you got a pretty decent discount. My two friends, Joey and Nick, and I all were all going to buy a puppet for a talk show and it became ‘Noah Buys a Puppet with 2 Friends.’ [Douglas] first showed up in a music video that I made the day after buying him. He had no hair and different eyes. About a year later, I made him look like me. Steve [the Union Marketing Manager] bought him a hoodie and he became me with a different nose. He has a different nose because of my nose fandom. Purely visual appreciation.”

What are some tools you couldn’t work without?

“Internet. I mean I probably could, but it’s not a life I’d want to live.”

What’s in your bag?

“I don’t have a bag, but I never had a bag. Oh God! I don’t have a bag! I can show you what is in my pockets; little wallet, big phone, and a sock.”

A sock?

“I found it in my vest pocket. Why one sock you ask? It’s a question for the ages.”

What is your favorite thing about video work?

“My favorite thing is that it’s very intuitive and it’s very freeing and you can anything with video. None of it is so hard that you’ll never be able to accomplish it. The trial and error process is the only way to go in a video. I’m sure that if most people tried it and kept at it,  they would get better. The only real way to get good at any kind of art is to just do it and work at it. You’re going to suck at it for a real long time, but one day, you’ll get better. I apply that to every part of my life.”

What is your aesthetic?

“Bowling alley carpet.”
