LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environment Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes the best-in-class strategies and practices. The University Union at UNT is on track for Platinum certification, the highest achievable honor, and will be one of only a few student union buildings in the country to achieve this milestone. UNT is ranked the greenest college in Texas by eCollegeFinder, so UNT really does “mean green.”
Students were very adamant about not only having more options, but having healthier choices available to them too. UNT Dining Services answered the call, and will be bringing new healthier choices including a build-your-own salad station, a deli concept, a noodle bar, and more. Retail dining will also be back in a big way! Returning favorite Chick-Fil-A will be back along with Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Burger King, Which Which, Jamba Juice, Taco Bueno, and a full-service Starbucks. That’s right, full service, so bring your rewards cards to rack up those points.
Fan of greenery? The new UNT Union’s rooftop garden will be another environmentally sustainable initiative. Whether you’re looking to chill out, study or spend time with friends, the new UNT Union’s roof top garden will be the space for you. It is perfectly located on the west side of the building on top of the new Syndicate, with gorgeous views of the Hurley Administration building and the Library Mall. The roof top garden will feature native Texas vegetation and a water conservation system.
The old UNT Union was designed for a campus population of 17,000 people. The UNT Union now serves that many people daily as the campus has almost doubled. The new UNT Union will offer more lounge space, study space, quiet space, food space, entertainment and a dedicated space just for student organizations! This is a first for UNT and a feature that will be sure to please the hundreds of student organizations still on campus.
There will be digital signage throughout the building to serve as directories, way-finding maps, and interactive displays highlighting daily events. The reservable meeting rooms will also be fully automated. Minutes before a reservation begins, the thermostat will adjust to the right temperature, lights will come on, doors will unlock, and projector screens will turn on automatically. This helps the building cut down on energy waste and operate more efficiently.
Looking to find a place to destress and relax? Trying to find your zen? The new meditation room is something you might want to check out. For thousands of years people have used meditation to move beyond the stress-inducing thoughts of emotional upsets, and into the peace and clarity of present moment awareness. The meditation room will feature serene artwork and will be a calming place away from class, projects and tests.
So you think you can dance? The new dance room in the new UNT Union is for you. The dance room will be available for reservations and will feature wood floors and mirrors to fulfill your dancing needs. Get into the groove because the music is contagious.
While you’re welcome to breastfeed anywhere you choose in Texas, most women want a space that they feel comfortable to nurse or pump in privately. This is why the lactation room was born! Keys will be available to check out to use the room.
