A new Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, the third in Denton, is slated to open with seven other vendors in the New UNT Union. Fuzzy’s in the Union will be operated by UNT Dining Services. Previously revealed by Lupe Zapata in the UNT Union’s Behind the Fence web series, the opening of a new Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is arguably the worst kept secret about the University Union Master Plan.
Compared to some of the others food chains moving into the UNT Union, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is relatively young. The original Fuzzy’s Taco Shop first came about in 2001 when founder Paul Willis saw a need in the TCU-area college market. That desire for baja style food seems to resonate across the United States. At the time of this article, Fuzzy’s has 85 locations across the United States. While the majority of Fuzzy’s locations are in Texas, the casual dining restaurant chain can be found in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Georgia, and Florida.
The Fort Worth, Texas based company has been a staple favorite of Denton residents and UNT students and not just because students can get a 10% discount. Fuzzy’s specialties include a variety of Tex-Mex items, such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, tamales and a signature white queso. The sides are the typical fair of rice and beans, potatoes, refried beans. “What’s unique is for being considered Tex-Mex, use of feta, in almost every dish,” said Karin Wacaser, spokesperson for Fuzzy’s.
When asked about a Fuzzy’s location on campus, most students reacted positively to the news. “The new University Union will be the premiere spot to be on campus.” said University Union Director Zane Reif. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop will be located in the new Syndicate in the new UNT Student Union at 1155 Union Circle, Denton, TX 76203. The UNT Student Union is expected to open during the Fall 2015. The UNT Fall 2015 semester begins August 24, 2015.
