Dean of Students Update

Dr. Maureen McGuiness speaks to students about the Union master plan project

Hello from the community center of the University of North Texas campus… the UNT Union!  As a student at UNT during the next couple of years you will have a considerable impact on the development, programming and building of our new Union.  What an awesome opportunity and a definite perk to being enrolled at UNT during the current time.   Your voice counts!!!

The Union should be the heart of campus, the living room of your college experience.   The Union may be the place you meet your future spouse or best friend; where you get involved in a program that requires your special touch or plan a dance with your student organization; it could be the place you meet your lifelong mentor or connect with your favorite UNT tradition. The University Union will enhance your student experience.  Currently, as an institution we are pushing through the bricks and mortar of the Union and have outgrown an area that was designed to serve 17,000 students.  With a current enrollment of 36,000 you can see why the current structure of our Union comes nowhere serving the needs of the entire student body.

I am sure you may ask yourself, “Why should I comment on the new Union?  I only go there to purchase my books or to eat at Taco Bell.”  Don’t you want the Union to be a place that you can hang out with all of your friends, find a quiet place to study or visit offices that can only enhance your college experience such as Campus Life, Union Program Council or Orientation and Transition Programs?  Don’t you want to walk in to a building that screams UNT Pride and emphasizes school spirit and tradition?  These are all ideas that are being discussed when we ask students what they want in a new Union.  At no other time will your input be more valuable in to the development of a building on this great campus.  I would argue that no other building on this campus would your word count as much as a student as it does for a UNION… a Students’ Union!

There are plenty of ways to get your voice heard.  The Union staff will continue to communicate with the student body and ask for feedback.  Please look at all the opportunities for you to provide feedback and give yours! Get involved and get connected!  You will be putting a deposit down on your future and the future of UNT.  This truly is your Union… your voice!
